AlpacasDuring your stay at Silverstream you will receive a tour of the farm. See mothers and babies (cria), white, light fawn, fawn, brown, grey and roan alpacas roaming the paddocks, learn about animal husbandry, showing, alpaca fleece and its wonderful qualities and the history of these wonderful animals that originate from the high altiplano of South America.
Kit and Sheryl are heavily involved in tourism and can offer a wide range of sightseeing and tours of Christchurch, throughout Canterbury and the rest of New Zealand. They have over 50 coach tours departing daily to the scenic resorts of Mt Cook, Queenstown, Milford Sound, the West Coast, the Marlborough Sounds, Rotorua and Auckland. Their New Zealand independent and group coach tours and New Zealand Guided Walks Directory include glacier walks, boat cruises in Milford Sound and the Bay of islands. For the more adventurous try the Christchurch day tour "Alpine Safari", that combines a classic TranzAlpine train journey, jetboating and a 4WD high country tour.
There are many streams and rivers nearby offering excellent fly fishing. The snow fed Waimakariri River mouth is only 10 kilometres away – some great salmon and trout fishing can be had near the sea. A fishing licence is required and can be obtained from most sportsware shops. The season is October to April but this can vary from region to region.
Just 10 minutes drive away is Waimak River Horseriding School which offers numerous horse riding packages from beginners to advanced riders. They maintain high safety standards and offer friendly tuition. This is an ideal activity for children with supervision.
There are a number of excellent wineries in Waipara about 20 minutes drive from Silverstream. New Zealand wines have an international following and most wineries provide tasting and lunch facilities – a great day out in the country.
Kaiapoi Village is just five kilometres away. There is a McDonalds, numerous restaurants and bars, Countdown, a travel agency, chemist, bookstore, video hire, library and a visitor information centre. There is also tennis, bowls and a roller blade rink.
A relaxing stroll down to the end of Moodys Road will introduce a variety of New Zealand farmlife – cattle, horses, pigs, goats and deer not to mention the many ducks and pukekos in the neighbouring wetlands.
Mt Grey is only a short distance and can offer some dramatic scenery from its upper reaches. The visitor information centre can provide maps and brochures on the various walks available.
There is an 18 hole golf course at Kaiapoi (4 kms away) and a private nine hole golf course just two kilometres away. Clubs and equipment are available for hire and green fees are very reasonable, in fact they are cheap by world standards.
